Peer support is defined as “people who share common experiences or face similar challenges come together as equals to give and receive help based on the knowledge that comes through shared experience.”
Blackness in this group is defined as the collection of sociohistorical experiences. If you exist in a Black body and experience Otherness in the context of Japanese society, this group is for you.
This support group is not to replace medical care or therapy. This group is not for emergencies or for those in immediate crisis. We are here to share our grievances, resources, and our triumphs without shame. Advice should not be given unless invited. Meet the Founder
Brianna Slaughter (They/them) is the founder of FKA Morena, a digital platform dedicated to supporting Black and marginalized immigrants pursuing education, work, and long-term life opportunities in Japan. Based in Kyoto, Brianna is an educator/lecturer, researcher, and content creator whose work centers on cross-cultural communication, race and media in Japan, and Black feminist theory.
Brianna holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Master of Arts in Global Studies from Doshisha University, where they specialized in American Studies and received a full 100% tuition reduction scholarship for both degrees. Their graduate research explored Black American aesthetics, racialized masculinity, and media representation in Japan’s Kansai region through a Black feminist lens.
Through FKA Morena, Brianna has designed and led online educational webinars for international audiences from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan, helping students and aspiring migrants navigate Japanese higher education, scholarships, and relocation processes. Their work combines academic research with accessible digital education, community building, and storytelling.
In addition to their educational work, Brianna has experience in social media marketing, cultural consulting, and international outreach, collaborating with organizations and brands focused on cross-cultural engagement and representation. Their creative and community projects include partnerships with Japanese cultural campaigns, contributions to art publications, and participation in international art exhibitions.
Brianna’s mission is to make information about living and studying in Japan more transparent, culturally grounded, and accessible for people who have historically been excluded from these opportunities.
